Five times a day in Marrakech and Istanbul, and other Muslim cities and towns, you hear the call to prayer. In Istanbul, the call sounds quite different from Marrakech – more modulated, more musical. This clip puts together two separate clips. The call to prayer is now broadcast from loudspeakers on the minaret, not from the live voice of the muezzin climbing to the top and calling it out. Within range of our hotel balcony in Istanbul, where these clips were shot, were perhaps four or five mosques, and you can hear one pick up the thread as another fades, and so on. The mosque featured in this clip is Sultan Ahmed’s Mosque, more widely known as the Blue Mosque. The other is the Hagia Sophia (pronounced as it spelled in Turkish: Ayasofia). We could see both these landmarks from our balcony (obviously!). Enjoy.
